PUNE: Activists opposed to the introduction of genetically modified (GM) crops on Thursday appealed to the state government to stop field trials of GM crops in the state.

“The expert panel appointed by the Supreme Court had recommended a 10-year moratorium on such trials and the matter is still in the court. However, the Maharashtra government went ahead and gave its approval to field trials of as many as 28 crops. The approval was hurried and the government did not think about the bio-safety norms,” said Shamika Mone from the Organic Farming Association of India while addressing a news conference here. Several other organizations concerned with organic farming were also present at the event.
