PANAJI: Fish production off India’s coastline has been hit because of the over-zealous use of chemical fertilizers by farmers, said SWA Naqvi, director of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO). Listing out the negative influences of the green revolution on India’s farming practices, Naqvi said, “As synthetic fertilizer is available cheap, ignorant farmers apply two to three times the required amount to their fields, hoping for a bumper crop. Plants can only absorb a certain amount, and the excess nitrogen gets washed off into water bodies, eventually landing up in the sea,” he pointed out.
