Farmers trained on management of banana and bio-composting

Dimapur: ATMA-Dimapur, Dhansiripar block in collaboration with Land Resources Department conducted a farmers training and demonstration programme at Lhothavi village on March 4.

ATMA-Dimapur Block Technology Manager Sentinaro Longchar in a press release said that Talimongba, HO & BTT member was the resource person for the topic ‘Orchard Management of Banana.’ The resource person suggested that growing banana does not require much effort but to have a successful cultivation of banana and achieve high yields it requires skills, sincerity and adopting proper planting methods. He explained in detail the planting time, crop geometry (spacing) for efficient as well as high-density planting, identification of sword and water suckers, planting methods and cultivation practices. To increase the production and quality of banana he advised the farmers to practice de-suckering which is the most important practice where only two suckers are left per plant while others are removed from the ground, removal of last one or two hands of the bunch (female hands), deflowering, propping, bunch covering with white polythene and right time of harvesting.
