CHENNAI: On the eve of the 67th Independence Day, an NGO urged chief minister J Jayalalithaa to hoist the national flag made of non-Bt cotton material on August 15.

In a letter faxed to the chief minister on Wednesday, Safe Food Alliance, which is one of the constituents of the Coalition for a GM-free India and Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture, wrote: “The tragic state that our seed and national sovereignty are in, with even the national flag being made from Bt cotton, a proprietary technology of Monsanto, an American multinational corporation. Bt cotton is the only genetically modified crop that is approved for commercial cultivation in India.”
