Kochi, Mar 29: A farmers’ cooperative based in Kottayam cultivating organic crop is planning to roll out a string of coffee shops across the country selling premium organic coffee.

Manarcadu Social Service Society (Mass) will start the cafe chain called Cafe de Monde in a few months from Kerala. The first one will be opened in Kochi which will be flagship store and then we will spread to other towns in the state.

By next year we will move to other states,” said Bijumon Kurian, president of Mass, adding that only organic beans from virgin plantations will be used at the cafe.

Mass is also toying with the idea of selling organic fruits and vegetables cultivated by it through these shops as there are limited facilities for exporting processed fruits or vegetables now.

Mass incorporated in 2001 has more than 5000 farmers under its wings who cultivate in 3100 hectares spread over 18 villages. It exports coffee, cocoa and spices to Europe through the company Plantrich Agritech Pvt. Ltd.
