Latin American Scientists Slam Nobel Laureates over GMO Crops Support

The Union of Latin American Scientists Committed to Society and Nature (UCCSN-AL) has rejected Tuesday the recent letter signed by several Nobel Prize laureates in favor of genetically modified crops and the transgenic rice called golden rice.

Golden rice was designed, along with other crops called bio-fortified, as a generic drug for malnourished children in poor countries. In golden rice, multiple forms of genetic manipulation are used in order to affect several functions of the plant. Several authors have criticised this technology, which, in fact, is not available due to the fact that its advocates have failed to reach a workable formulation for distribution.
