Meerut: A study has revealed the presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), organic compounds resistant to environmental degradation which have been banned throughout the country, in many vegetables grown in Meerut district. These vegetables are also supplied to markets in Delhi, NCR and parts of UP. The study, conducted by NEER Foundation, an NGO working in the field of agriculture, found that water from the highly polluted Kali river was being used by farmers to irrigate their fields causing the contamination. “The test results are shocking. Pesticides, whose use is prohibited, have been found in most of the vegetables,” said Raman Tyagi, director of NEER Foundation.
