NEW DELHI: To celebrate the anniversary of first successful opposition to genetically modified (GM) food in India, and to continue their opposition to the entry of such food products in India, pro-organic food organizations have decided to commemorate the third anniversary of the moratorium as ‘Citizens’ action for safe food’ on February 9, by gathering at JantarMantar in Delhi.

Those who can’t make it to Delhi would be holding their own gatherings at their respective cities and townships. In Vadodara, Jatan Trust is organizing a rally at Dairy Den circle in the afternoon of February 9. ” Those who want to travel to Delhi to join the crowd at Jantar Mantar, are most welcome to do so, while others can get together here to spread the message in favour of organic food,” said Dhiru Mistry, a member of the Trust.

Three years ago, pro-organic food organizations and individuals had held countrywide agitations and forced the then environment minister Jairam Ramesh to conduct public hearings on the Bt brinjal debate, which had finally resulted in a moratorium on Bt brinjal.

Meanwhile, invites have been sent across India from “Citizens’ Action for Safe Food” with a message,” Let us all join hands to celebrate National Safe Food Day on 9th Feb…(and) to celebrate the fact that in India, we have been able to keep away an unknown, and unproven-to-be-safe GMO called Bt Brinjal away from our plates. Let us make sure that we have safe food.”
