Public Protest Against GM Foods & BRAI Bill

October 22, 2013 0 Comments

Dear All,

October 22, 2013

6 pm to 8 pm

Venue: Tilak Putla, Mahatma Phule Mandai, Pune.

You must be aware that the government has introduced the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India Bill in parliament. Through this bill, it is attempting to override the moratorium imposed on Bt Brinjal and other GM crops by Jairam Ramesh, the former environment minister, which he was forced to do after nationwide protests.

People all over the country have been protesting against this surreptitious attempt by the govt to fast-track approval to GM food crops in the country.

Various progressive organisations of Pune have come together to organise a public meeting against the BRAI bill and demand that the govt implement the recommendations of the Technical Committee set up the Supreme Court of India Рwhich has recommended that there be a moratorium on GM  crops for 10 years, and GM crops where India is the country of origin be completely banned.

Do join us for this important protest.

Organisations participating:

1. Abhijit Vaidya – Samajvadi Yuvjan Sabha

2. Justice Kolse Patil – Lokshashan Andolan

3. Medha Thatte – Pune Jilha Molkarin Sangathana

4. Alka Joshi – Lokayat

We have not been able to contact all progressive organisations of Pune to mobilise them for this protest. If you represent a progressive organisation and would like to join the protest, do let me know either on phone or email and we shall include your name in the pamphlet – do accept our apologies for not contacting you earlier for this.

Draft pamphlet will be circulated by today evening.

In solidarity,
