The organic inroad in Goa’s food industry

Panjim, July 11: he latest trend to hit the food industry is organic. Check out the food section in malls, superstores and discover the space that organic is hogging these days.

A decade back only expensive lifestyle stores kept these special products. But nowadays even the neighborhood shopkeeper knows the significance of organic food. Choosing between brands of tea in an ordinary grocery store acquires a dash of the extraordinary when you are suggested a packet of organic tea by the unassuming shopkeeper.

In Goa, the organic fad is catching up among residents. Environment groups, educated elite, the arty crowd, rich and fashion conscious are popularising it and creating demand. It has made an impact on sales according to storeowners. They are selling more of organic fare and earning more as the goods fetch better margins.

The Magsons outlet at Caculo Mall, Panaji, has a separate section for organic food. Pulses, rice, atta, spices are all available in the organic range and staff manning the section says that selection is got wider over the years. Lifestyle chain Fabindia has a good selection of organic food too. And all the big stores such as retail chain Big Bazaar, Delfinos, Borkars, AJs, Newtons  have a robust choice in organic stuff. According to the store managers the organic section is regularly frequented by customers.
