Its a must watch documentary for every Indian by P. Sainath is a film by Deepa Bha. A wave of suicides has swept through the Indian farming community in recent years as, driven into heavy debt by deadly competition, many small farmers don’t see another way out. A market-fundamentalist Indian government has so far refused to take its responsibilities to stop this growing epidemic.
It is a beautiful, yet is some ways an astounding documentary (for us Indians who have not seen bees being taken to work on trucks across thousands of miles) about the phenomenon of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), which has afflicted bees, the world over. It is predominantly caused by a class of systemic pesticides (explained as: they are taken up into every part of the plant which is treated with them – including the pollen and nectar) called neonicotinoids.
According to Americans: not enough conclusive evidence, so they haven’t done anything to ban the pesticide, and CCD continues to devastate bees and destroy bee keeper livelihoods. But some European nations have issued bans on some pesticides belonging to this class of neuro-active toxin. (Watch on FilmsForAction.org)
